La Paz to Uyuni: Bus, Flight or Train Compared

Updated Date:

Author: La Paz Life Editorial Team

Quick Summary: There are three realistic ways to get from La Paz to Uyuni — an overnight bus (roughly 9–12 hours), a one-hour flight, or a bus-plus-train combination via Oruro. In 2026 the calculation has changed: a national diesel shortage has thinned out bus departures, fares rose 40% under a new ATT ruling in January, and the boliviano’s float has made dollar conversions a moving target. The bus is still the cheapest and most frequent option, flying is the fastest and most reliable, and the train is the slow scenic choice for people with time to spare.

The Short Answer for 2026

If you want the honest version: most travelers still take the overnight bus, and most are glad they did. It leaves in the evening, arrives at dawn, saves you a night’s accommodation, and drops you in Uyuni in time for the 10:30am salt flats tour departures.

But 2026 is not a normal year for Bolivian road transport. Bolivia’s diesel shortage has left buses queuing at service stations for days at a time. Reporting by El Deber in July found that only around 20% of interdepartmental buses were still running, with the other 80% stuck in fuel lines. By August, eju.tv reported companies at the Potosí terminal dropping to one departure every two days. The situation shifts week to week, so the practical advice is: book the bus, but have a backup plan.

Flying is the low-stress option and, at roughly one hour gate to gate, it turns a two-day logistical exercise into a morning. The train is a beautiful, slow curiosity rather than a sensible way to make the trip in a hurry.

Best for budget travelers

The bus, without much competition. Even after this year’s increases, the seat is a fraction of the airfare, and you skip a night’s hotel bill.

Best for comfort

A flight, if it fits your budget. Failing that, a full cama bus with a 160-degree recline and onboard heating. Do not economise on this particular route — the Altiplano gets brutally cold at night.

Best for first-time visitors

The overnight bus with a tourist-focused operator. You get the practical benefit of a dawn arrival and the reassurance of staff who deal with foreign passengers every day.

Best for travelers arriving from Peru

If you are coming into Bolivia overland, it is worth thinking about the whole chain rather than just this one leg. Travelers crossing at Lake Titicaca often arrive into La Paz with Bolivia Hop, rest a day or two at altitude, then continue south to Uyuni. Its sister service Peru Hop covers the Peruvian side of that same corridor.

Taking the Bus from La Paz to Uyuni

The route

The road runs about 734 km south from La Paz through El Alto, then across the Altiplano via Oruro and Challapata. It is fully paved now, which is a meaningful improvement on the bone-rattling gravel stretch older guidebooks describe. Buses leave from the La Paz Bus Terminal at Plaza Antofagasta, the yellow Eiffel-designed building about 15 minutes’ walk from the tourist area — most people take a taxi.

Almost all departures are overnight, typically between 8pm and 10pm, arriving in Uyuni somewhere between 5am and 8am.

What it costs

The Gobierno Autónomo Municipal de La Paz publishes the authorised fare bands for the terminal. For La Paz to Uyuni, the regulated ranges are:

  • Normal seat: Bs 68–95
  • Semi-cama: Bs 100–137
  • Cama: Bs 151–197

Those bands reflect the 40% increase that took effect on 2 January 2026. The Autoridad de Regulación y Fiscalización de Telecomunicaciones y Transportes introduced a transitional fare band under Resolution ATT-DJ-RAR-TR LP 32/2025, running for 180 days while technical studies were completed, following the removal of fuel subsidies under Supreme Decree 5503.

A word of caution: travelers have reported paying above the authorised ATT rates as operators pass on the cost of fuel bought outside official channels, with black-market diesel selling at around Bs 15 a litre against a much lower official price. Ask for the posted fare, and be aware that on some routes the real-world price is running ahead of the regulated band.

Which companies run it

Todo Turismo has long been the tourist-oriented choice on this route — heating, an onboard toilet, a light meal, and staff used to foreign passengers. Panasur, Trans Titicaca, Trans Omar and Cruz del Norte also run the corridor with cama and semi-cama options. Quality varies enormously between the top and bottom of the market, and the bottom of the market on a freezing Altiplano night is genuinely unpleasant.

Flying from La Paz to Uyuni

Boliviana de Aviación operates the route from El Alto International Airport to Joya Andina Airport in Uyuni, with roughly daily service and a flight time of about an hour.

What flying buys you:

  • You skip a cold night sitting upright.
  • You gain a full day at either end.
  • You sidestep the diesel shortage entirely.

What it costs you:

  • Considerably more money, with fares that jump sharply when demand rises.
  • Limited seats, which sell out around Bolivian holidays and the February–March mirror season on the salt flats.
  • A steep altitude drop and climb — Uyuni sits at 3,670 m, El Alto at 4,061 m, so you are not escaping the thin air in either direction.

One practical note: Uyuni’s airport is small and taxis into town are quick and cheap, but flights are occasionally cancelled for weather or operational reasons. If your salt flats tour is booked and non-refundable, build in a buffer day.

The Bus and Train Combination via Oruro

The Ferroviaria Andina (FCA) line runs between Oruro and Uyuni, not all the way from La Paz, so this is a two-stage trip: bus to Oruro (3–4 hours, around Bs 45–60), then train south.

Two services operate the line:

  1. Expreso del Sur — faster and more punctual of the two, with better carriages.
  2. Wara Wara del Sur — slower and cheaper, with a more local feel.

Between them they run only a handful of services a week, and departures are in the evening. You will need to get between Oruro’s bus terminal and its train station by taxi, and you will need to check current timetables rather than trusting anything published online more than a few months ago.

Who is this actually for? Travelers who like trains, who have a spare day, and who want to see the Altiplano roll past in the last of the daylight. It is not the sensible choice if you are trying to get to a salt flats tour on time.

“wouldn’t have been able to get from Puno to La Paz in a day” — Jess E, Country not stated, August 2025.

What Changed in 2026 and Why It Matters

Three things have shifted the picture for anyone planning this route:

  • Fuel. The diesel shortage is the big one. In mid-August, Transporte Libre said fuel volumes still were not covering demand for interdepartmental and freight services, cutting fleet operability by up to 50%. Expect fewer departures than timetables suggest, and expect some cancellations.
  • Fares. January’s 40% ATT increase, followed by informal surcharges, means old price guidance is badly out of date.
  • Currency. Bolivia moved to a managed float on 29 June 2026, and the boliviano has since traded well above the old Bs 6.96 peg. Dollar conversions in any article — including this one — should be treated as approximate. Check the Banco Central de Bolivia for the current official reference before you budget.

Altitude, Cold and Practical Preparation

La Paz sits around 3,600 m, El Alto higher still, and Uyuni at 3,670 m. You are not descending at any point on this journey, so the altitude never lets up.

  • Give yourself at least two nights in La Paz before heading south. The teleférico is a good low-effort way to see the city while you acclimatise.
  • Overnight buses get cold. Not chilly — cold. Bring a warm layer, thick socks and a hat even if the bus advertises heating.
  • Carry your own water and snacks. Stops are short and shops in Challapata are basic.
  • Keep your passport and cash on your body, not in the overhead rack or hold.
  • Coca tea and a slow first day help more than anything you can buy at a pharmacy, though altitude medication is worth discussing with a doctor before you travel.

FAQ

Is the road from La Paz to Uyuni paved? Yes. The full route via Oruro and Challapata is now sealed, which is a significant change from the unpaved southern section that older guides describe. That said, paved does not mean smooth or fast — the Altiplano stretch is exposed, and during the January to March rainy season, sections near Oruro and Challapata can flood and add two or three hours to the journey. Fog is also common at altitude, and drivers slow down considerably in it. Plan for 10 to 12 hours door to door rather than the 9 hours some timetables promise.

Will the diesel shortage actually stop me from travelling? Probably not, but it may complicate things. The shortage has reduced frequency rather than eliminating service, and tourist-focused operators generally prioritise their scheduled departures. What you should expect is fewer choices of departure time, a higher chance of a delay, and occasional same-day cancellations. Book a day or two ahead rather than turning up at the terminal on spec, keep your Uyuni tour booking flexible if you can, and consider a flight if your schedule has no slack in it at all.

How much should I budget in dollars? This is harder to answer in 2026 than it used to be. The boliviano moved to a managed float in late June and has traded across a wide range since. Rather than converting, budget in bolivianos: roughly Bs 100–200 for a decent bus seat, plus Bs 2 for the terminal fee, and Bs 10–20 for a taxi at either end. Withdraw bolivianos in La Paz rather than relying on card payments in Uyuni, where card acceptance is patchy and ATMs occasionally run dry.

Should I book my salt flats tour before I arrive in Uyuni? For the standard three-day tour, booking ahead is worth it in high season (roughly June to August, and again in February and March for the mirror effect). Uyuni has dozens of agencies and quality varies wildly — some cut corners on vehicle maintenance, driver hours and food. If you are arriving on a dawn bus with a tour already confirmed, you can drop your bag, get breakfast and be on the salt by mid-morning. If you would rather see the agency in person first, allow a spare day.

Is it safe to take the overnight bus as a solo traveler? Broadly yes, and thousands of travelers do it every season without incident. The usual precautions apply and are worth taking seriously: keep valuables on your person, do not accept food or drink from strangers, use a padlock on your daypack, and photograph your hold luggage tag. Choosing a reputable tourist operator rather than the cheapest ticket at the terminal makes a real difference here, both for comfort and for the general standard of the service.

Limitations

Bolivian transport pricing, schedules and fuel availability are all moving quickly in 2026, so specific fares and departure times in this guide may be out of date by the time you travel — check the ATT tariff board and confirm directly with the operator a day or two before departure. Dollar equivalents are unreliable while the boliviano floats, so we have quoted bolivianos wherever possible and recommend checking the current rate yourself. Train timetables in particular change without much notice; if the rail option matters to you, verify it at the FCA office in Oruro or Uyuni rather than relying on any third-party listing, including ours.
